Flying in the 60s was awesome the way driving a Caddy was awesome. If you adjust for inflation, you’d be like “F that!”

I love flying. Just give me a window and some offline Google Maps so I can track my progress via GPS and see everything. Oceans blow, but at least most of those involve Ambien and Johnny Walker.

Funfact: My grandpa worked as an attorney/lobbyist in DC in the 60s and early 70s. He fought against deregulation of the Airlines because he believed one of the few good uses of government intervention was to ensure access to airline service as almost a public utility. It’s sort of analogous to Net Neutrailty today. There are some things that people believe can’t just go to the highest bidder. Economic rationing works well for most things, though.

yeah, its a LOOOOT cheaper to fly now a days, but not as cool. given the two options I would still take cheaper. I also love flying. Cool story about grandad, its ended up being sort of like a utility now, just one with lots of extra fees

Yeah, you could say the market has spoken and it ended up being sort of a lose-lose situation: cattle call airlines AND very limited services to small towns and cities. I’m thankful that Southwest and a few others have worked around the economics and made it a little better, though.

I remember as a kid (early 80s) before deregulation was fully in place. You could fly just about anywhere. Even our little town of 10,000 people had US Air twice daily flights to a hub.
